Amazon avarice

LJ appears to be sending me all the comments from a couple weeks back that it hadn’t before, which is nice, I suppose, but completely unnecessary at this point.

Embarked upon our initial forays into Christmas shopping, and lo it was overwhelming. But also successfulish. Got some solid ideas and accomplished some happy consumerism. And in the process of shopping for others at Amazon.com, I got all covetous and added a bunch of things I came across to my wish list. Tis the season to be acquisitive. I am a contributing member of a materialistic society. Yup.

Writing Stuff

Argh! I forgot to send the contract back to Escape Pod for “My Friend is a Lesbian Zombie” yesterday. Dagnabit. Normally I make it a point of sending contracts back the day or the day after I receive them so I don’t ever forget. Well, I forgot. That goes to the top of my “things to do” list for today.

New Words: -167 on “Arachne’s Gift” (renamed from the rather generic “Arachne”). Took me all day yesterday to do a handful of passes, but there was much tightening and tweaking. Foisted it upon fosteronfilm and after I make a few minor edits, I’ll be at first draft. A little anxious about “Rue and Ruin” as I haven’t received a confirmation from the Critters herder informing me that my manuscript has been bumped up the queue. If I need to wait another week before it goes up, that’s fine, but it pushes “Arachne’s Gift” down another week. If that happens, I may think about soliciting a handful of non-Critters writerly feedback instead before sending it out. Ponder ponder.

I’ve let my Critters membership lapse, but I’m always available to read and offer feedback on anything you write. 🙂

I love the Amazon wish list. I think I have something like 10 pages. It helps me keep track of things I want to pick up, but haven’t gotten around to yet.

  2. terracinque says:

Oh, I’d been meaning to mention Escape Pod to you. I didn’t know if you’d heard of it, or if you’d considered it as a secondary market.

  3. I’m having the same comment issue…

“Oooh, comments! Somebody loves me! No, wait… somebody loved me two weeks ago.”

  4. radjacee says:

    Me too

Yea, I just got notices about LJ comments too. But its selective, because some I got at the time. Maybe LJ just needs some fine tuning.

I’d be up for an early crit trade…send me “Arachne’s Gift” and I’ll send you “Metamorphoses”. Of course, it’s probably not a fair trade…mine’s 15,000 words long… 🙂

    • Eugie Foster says:

Well, “Arachne’s Gift” made it up to the Critters queue for next week, so I don’t need alternative crit sources, but if you want to do a trade, if you crit “Rue and Ruin” this week, I’ll do “Metamorphoses” next week. (The words counts are more equitable, with R&R coming in at around 11-12K.)

  6. yep, LJ is being a prick.

I checked out your Avaricious Amazon Wish List. So you or fosteronfilm would like The gentle art of verbal self defense, eh? It didn’t help me much, I still collapse into a pile of quivering jello whenever I attempt to speak before large groups of people.

You might check out The Fine Art of Small Talk; I just heard a segment on NPR about it.

I can send you my copy of The gentle art of verbal self defense via media mail. Would you like this slightly used copy?

    • Eugie Foster says:

While “quivering jello” is not the highest recommendation I’ve heard for a book, I’d love to be the recipient of your slightly-used The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense. Actually, I was interested in it not only because of the subject matter, but because of the fiction I’ve read by Suzette Haden Elgin. Me likie her writie.

      • dean13 says:

Uh, so maybe I occasionally exaggerate. Big deal.

I will snail mail you my slightly used copy of The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense. Honest. No, seriously. I am not exaggerating.

Ho ho ho, merry acquisitive holiday season!

Rue and Ruin is up at critters. I did my small happy dance (the seated version, as I was at work) and printed it out.

Thankyou! At least this week I won’t be searching for a ms where have to give basic grammar lessons. In my current state, I’m not up to it.

  9. keesa_renee says:

Eugie, forget a contract? Surely not! 😀

And, for future reference, I will be more than happy to read and non-Critter any of your stories. But, if they’re long ones, I think you should know that it would probably be faster to put them up at Critters. :-[

    • Eugie Foster says:

Aw thanks, sweetie! I prefer sending things through Critters too. I have learned the folly of my ways. I was foolish to ever doubt the prowess of Aburt, the Critter herder. I’m all bumped up for both this week (“Rue and Ruin”) and next (“Arachne’s Gift”). Whew.

Jeff Bezos is worth $131 billion, according to Forbes, and the Amazon founder and CEO is clear about the primary way he plans to spend that much money: getting to space.
