Received a rejection from Escape Pod, but a nice one. Stephen invited me to send something else, and went on to say that “The Life and Times of Penguin” has received some good feedback. ‘Course my brain backfired. I sent something off, only remembering afterward that he wants submissions in the body of an email, not as an attachment. Oops. I sent an apology and an email with the proper submission formatting, but I haven’t made a gaffe like that in a long while.

I’m engaging in an unprecedented amount of world building for this story. I keep thinking “this would make a good novel,” which is very strange as I don’t normally enter into that sort of writerly think space. It’s also somewhat distracting as I need to keep this under 8K. I keep telling myself that I can always extend it into a novel after I finish the damn story.

If you are thinking a story would make a good novel, it’s your muse telling you. Listen to your muse! Or your voices from Jupiter! The voices know what they are talking about!
And also, I think you are ready for a novel. I think the fairy-tale retellings are becoming too easy for you, and it’s time to stretch.
So sez the utterly unpublished person with essay problems… but I think I have them sorted.
Actually, this essay would possibly be a reasonable basis for an honours-level thesis in Classics.

Speaking of boo-boos?
I think I made one the other day in saying while venting that people who don’t reply to my comments should take me off of their FList. That was a very generic statement for specific people, and I hope I didn’t make you nervous like I did several other folks. I’ve had a few people ask me about it, and a few comment more, so I’m trying to tell those who had nothing to do with it that I was referring to some folks who aren’t close to me at all, and who didn’t take me off their list when they had a chance to.
Anyway, I’m stupid-silly when I’m down.
On an unrelated note, before I spend the weekend organizing the paperwork and putting all the contracts back into a single folder: my mind keeps saying that I need to pay you in October or November, but if I am supposed to do so in September, please tell me to hurry up! 😉
I still have skunk stories, btw. I’ve been emailing for anaisdotmfk.com, though, since I was behind on that. I’m almost done with it.

I don’t think you made a boo-boo. It’s your journal, you’re allowed to say whatever you want in it. As for making me nervous, you don’t need to worry ’bout me. I’m with you for the count unless you tell me “scram” straight up.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea where we are with payment dates. You’re ahead of the game as far as I’m concerned!

Well, I’ll be putting the folder together to make certain, but I think it’s scheduled to be paid for either on Halloween or the 15th of November. The harddrive copy doesn’t have a date on it- I filled that in by hand. Now, I’ve made that section a form field and turned the contract into a template as well as a merge document.

In terms of EP, sorry about the rejection. Bummer. However, don’t feel bad about how you submitted. I am 99.9% positive that not long ago (because I copied and pasted their requirements for reference and then submitted my own story as an attachment) that that was how their guidelines read. The submitting in the body of an email is a new thing. 🙂

Do you have a template for your world-building? Or do you just jot notes as you work on the WIP?

A template? No, not me. My worldbuilding is pretty loose and makeshift. Normally I don’t do much of it at all, except as what’s strictly necessary in the story. And I write a lot of urban fantasy and Eastern medieval fantasy, so “my” worlds are modern day and ancient history. The latter I look out the window to get the details right, the former I research as needed.
So yeah, I’m in the “jotting notes” camp.
