Dr. Who, napping, writing

There was much napping yesterday and much Doctor Who watching. I’m still tired, but we’re up to episode 10.

Writing Stuff

Yesterday was all about rewriting and editing passes on “Princess Bufo Marinus, I Call Her Amy.” Fired it off to my editor and in a matter of hours got an “I really like it” back with rewrite request. Woohoo! Ergo, I didn’t get back to “Rue and Ruin” and don’t expect to until I complete the rewrite.

Also got a list of interview questions from Armand Rosamilia, editor of Carnifex Press. He’s publishing these mini-interviews as a sort of “get to know the authors” dealie on the Carnifex site. Pondering my answers . . .

Nitpicky point, but would the species be in lowercase even in a title? Bufo marinus

    • Eugie Foster says:

I debated about that too. I’m actually not sure because of the conflicting rules–major words in a title are supposed to be capitalized, but scientific species names should not. Which takes precedence? I’ve got Bufo marinus correct in the manuscript itself when it comes up, but I continue to be torn over the proper way to do it in the title.

I prefer the lowercase because it makes it more obvious what a Bufo marinus was. Maybe there’s an old classic story title out there that might settle the point?

        • Eugie Foster says:

I thought about using the titles of published scientific papers as a guide (and yes, they use cap/lowercase instead of cap/cap), but I’m not sure if non-fiction papers are a good corollary to a fiction title, especially since I noticed that a lot of paper titles don’t cap all the important words that a fiction title would.

Can you think of any stories with a scientific name in it? GAH. I waffled over this for a while. I continue to waffle.

I’ve been holding off on doing any Who surfing until after I’d seen all of the season, so I wouldn’t accidentally stumble upon spoilers. But we watched out episode 13 yesterday, so I’ll be sure to check out your links. Thanks!

    I drool in envy.

Not related, I’m afraid, I listened to your story on Escape Pod. I like how you captured the essence of what it means to be a balloon!
