Ergonomics Issues: Ouch ouch ow

Something about my home office configuration is egregiously unergonomic. Under an hour of writing and my wingstubs ache. Very not good.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I got SafeType keyboard when I started getting carpel tunnel in my hands, and the relief was extremely noticeable.

It takes about an hour to get used to it, as long as you can touchtype (more informational than anything, in your case 😀 ). I use it at work, and it helps enough that I can use a regular keyboard everywhere else without a twinge.

If you’re interested, I could drop mine off at your place for you to try for a couple days, and see if it helps. The only downside is that it semi-requires a desk/table arrangement.

Thanks for the suggestion and the offer! But I’m going to try swapping out my laptop keyboard with a more standard configged ergo one in my home office for now. From the images on their website, I don’t think the SafeType will fit where a keyboard needs to go upstairs. My home office desk is less a desk and more a glorified bookcase doing double-duty—undoubtedly a culprit as to my wingstub issues—and space is pretty limited.

        Roger that 🙂

Let me know if you do change your mind. While the keyboard is definitely higher than a regular one, it’s actually only about 3/4 the width.

  2. You’re just now noticing this? Or is the setup that much better at the day job? If so, emulate!

I’ve noticed it before, but it seems to have gotten worse. I used to be able to work for at least a couple hours at home before I started hurting, but I’ve either queered something with my home config. or my wingstubs are less tolerant. Hrm. I don’t think it’s possible to match the configuration of office and home office. The chair, desk furniture, and keyboard setup are too dissimilar, but I’m going to try swapping out keyboards and adjusting my chair height to see if I can improve it.
