HP laptop progress

The HP support folks called back and arranged to send us packaging materials and labels et al. to FedEx my laptop to them for repair, all gratis as part of the warranty. That’s all good and satisfactory. I did think MicroCenter’s $50 charge for sending it to HP for us was rather a rip-off. My repair order also appears to have been forwarded to a management type who is not in India, a level above tech support, so I have high hopes that this will result in a proper resolution.

Did another major backing-up clean off of my laptop. fosteronfilm is getting close to being able to wipe and re-load the older VAIO desktop for me to use while my laptop’s in the shop.

Writing Stuff

I’m a bit concerned about some of my Tangent reviewers. A couple new ones that contacted me appear to have vanished off the face of the Earth after I sent them their first assignments to review, and even a veteran or two isn’t responding to my gentle prods for a status update. Was it something I said? Did I eat too many virtual onions?

Received:
61-day SALE of “My Friend is a Lesbian Zombie” to Escape Pod. My second sale to these folks, I can’t wait to see what Stephen has in mind for this one. He said the podcast is slated for sometime in February 2006.

New Words: 1600 on “Arachne” and I’m at zero draft. That was a very satisfying couple days work. Going to do some editing passes, try and cull a couple hundred words, then hand it off to fosteronfilm to first reader. This week “Rue and Ruin” should be going up on Critters, so I’ll try to get “Arachne” up next week.

  1. Great news on the sale. I checked their site out a couple of times. Looks like an interesting venue. Let us know when the story is up and running. Nice word count, too. I have to get back into writing something today, although my digging around in the karma/dharma pit for you must have jiggled a few vibes around as I have an IDEA. Amazing!

Congrats on the sale! And I love the title. 🙂

  3. Sigh. The last few anthologies I edited were full of this sort of non-response. Even from professionals who I’d worked with before, who had said they’d deliver something but then didn’t even reply to email queries for a status report, etc. And a conference I’m putting together has been getting the same sort of response from the editors I’ve queried about a panel… Don’t know what it is that non-communication is so rampant–and not even from strangers! And it’s not like I’m emailing about things they aren’t actually interested in. Sigh.

It’s a pandemic of communication breakdowns! Eeeee! Hee.

I’m hoping it’s just the holiday season and everyone’s busy, but the silence from the new reviewers is irksome. With the veterans, they’ve got an established track record and I’m pretty sure they’re just busy or there’s some other explainable crisis. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. . .

Did I eat too many virtual onions?

Well, I didn’t want to say anything. 😉

:blinks: Hope it’s not me you’re referring to, Eugie! In case it is, status report is as follows:

The DM stories downloaded perfectly, and are in the middle of being read and reviewedp Trying to search out their hidden meanings, this time. 😉 And the Australian magazine still hasn’t come in. I think a wallaby must have eaten it en route…

Whoops! I knew there was something I had forgotten…I’d better go do a crit now, or I may not be around next week when your story comes up–and that would be sad, because I think I’ve critted every story you’ve put up except for the ones where I was inactive at the time. I don’t want to ruin a perfect record! 😉

Whoot on the sale and the great word count! (I love the title and am quite intrigued, btw.)

Must actually write something today, as opposed to doing writing-related paperwork.

    • Eugie Foster says:

Thank you! This story was slated to be published first in Here & Now issue #7. Supposedly, the ‘zine is currently at the printers, but this issue has been delayed several times. I’m wondering if the podcast will come out before the print pub . . .

“…Lesbian Zombie” is the best title ever

make sure to issue a reminder when that one is actually available.

on the vanishing reviewer phenomenon, I know that I’ve been crushed by end of semester stress, is it possible that your vanishing reviewers are in academia?

    • Eugie Foster says:

Re: Lesbian Zombie – Watch this space for updates!

And yeah, I’m assuming a lot of the communication lag is the holiday season and end-of-semester crush, but it does make a lowly editor fret.

Fingers crossed for a swift and careful repair of your laptop. You are wise to back everything up. I listened to a guy at the computer store one day who said he could install something and not mess up other stuff. Big Mistake. Computer was gone 6 weeks salvaging my stuff.

You’re really taking off girl. Keep the stories flowing.

      Re: Computers

I’ve heard from various HP help forums that they routinely wipe hard drives so at least I’m forewarned. I’m making multiple backups of my data (especially my writing files!), but I’m still quite peeved at the prospect of losing all my settings and customizations. Sigh.

        Re: Computers

well, we can fix that for you …

just load Norton Ghost, image your machine, and when you get it back, replace the image. Everything is back *exactly* the way you had it.

I have a the software if you want to do that.

        • Eugie Foster says:

          Re: Computers

Holy Jeebus! That would absolutely rawk! Maybe we could have a dinner-movie-backup-Eugie’s-laptop-settings-hang-out-evening later this week?

          • mtfay says:

            Re: Computers

A warning about Ghost…I don’t know if it is better than it used to be, but 2 or 3 years ago, if you changed anything hardware wise after you made the image, the Ghost image wouldn’t work correctly. So, if while fixing your machine, they change something significant, your old image would not work. Make sure that this version of Ghost isn’t like that…

          • Eugie Foster says:

            Re: Computers

Good to know. I’m still making thorough data backups, so no matter what, I’ll have the important stuff. So if Ghost doesn’t work, I’m not out anything that I wasn’t before.

            Sigh. Stupid hardware problems.

Congratulations on the sale, Eugie! 🙂

  10. mtfay says:

Hey. I responded. It’s just that my normal assignment at the moment doesn’t release a new issue until at least January!

    • Eugie Foster says:

You’re not on my grumpy list either. Your responses are always timely. It’s the ones who don’t respond at all that I’m grousing about.

      • mtfay says:

Okey dokey…However, for 2 weeks, from Dec. 21 to Jan 5, my replies will probably be less timely, as I will be on the road, relying on other people’s internet connections:(.

        • Eugie Foster says:

Duly noted. I’m going to mail that review material out to you today, so hopefully it’ll get to you before you embark upon your great exodus eastwards . . . to the Midwest.

          • mtfay says:

I will watch for it. Next week I’m in class all week, so I might be getting home earlier at night. In which case, I might have time to finish it before I leave. *might*.

    My excuse? I suck.

Actually, I’m a little scared to finish the anthology because the last few stories have been so goddamn depressing. I don’t need more depression. That being said, I’ll finish this SOB ASAP; the review itself is half-written.

Did I mention that I suck? And I’m sick. Sick and sucky.

    • Eugie Foster says:

You may be sick, but you’re not sucky. You do respond to my emails, and I know you’ve been feeling very under the weather so I know where you’re at. Ergo, you’re not on my grumpy list either.

I do hope you feel better soon, and not just because I want that review.

  12. tstauffer says:

I really must read the “Lesbian Zombie” story. 🙂 Let me know when it comes out. 🙂
