Oof. I’m at 2.1K and I’m only about two-thirds of the way through this folk tale. Damn. No help for it but to finish it and see what I can cut, I suppose. I suspect the space issue is what’s giving me such trouble in getting this one on the page. I knew this story was too long for 2K. Argh.

Damn, I know how that writer feels… it’s 12:05am on July 14 here in Australia, and thank any listening deities I’m having a day off today.
My 2 major characters are stuck in a situation that I can’t resolve, and it’s crucial to the rest of the story because if they don’t leave home the $#%!@&!!!!! story won’t progress.
And on the editing front: do a global search for “that.” I have been known to eliminate over 40 words from an essay by eliminating unnecessary “thats.” And with lecturers who enforce word counts with scissors, every single word counts!

Phew. And I thought I was the only one who occasionally ate ice cream for breakfast. What kinds was it?
That gruesome animation is interesting comment on the creative process. Brings to mind a quote from Gene Fowler: Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead.

Why the 2K cut off? Is it because of a market you have in mind for this particular story or because it’s easier in general to get published with a shorter wordcount?
Both actually, but primarily the first. I aim all of my folk tales at Cricket first (and sometimes last) which has a cutoff length of 2K. I’ve sold stories to them that have exceeded this limit, but I try to stay in the ballpark.
Ice Cream
Hm: ice cream. *ponders* But that means I’ll have to go outside. Hm. But, I haven’t had any all summer. Hm. Yeah, I think an ice cream run is in order.
