Notes from the hospital

They’ve got WiFi at the hospital, a small but appreciated blessing. The coffee here, however, is a bit raw.

DiL had a fever last night, so they’re postponing the pace maker surgery. fosteronfilm and I have been reading out loud to him. He seems to appreciate the Thurber. He actually grinned after one of them: “The Shrike and the Chipmunks.”

They’re going to try to take him off the ventilator again tomorrow. Last time they tried, his throat started swelling shut due to irritation from the tube, so after an hour and a half they had to replace it. But he was taking breaths on his own before that. He’s strong enough to breathe unassisted. If only we can just get him over the swelling and the intermittent fevers.

Hospitals, not cheery places.

No, they’re not. DiL is very lucky to have you there for support. It’s wonderful that you’re reading to him.

Thanks, sweetie. DiL is a retired English teacher, used to be able to recite Macbeth from rote memory. And I’m sure he’s bored to tears when he’s awake. And since he can’t talk and it’s hard to hold up a single-sided conversation, we figured hearing us read would at least be comforting.

Not cheery places at all, and you have enough to worry about with your DIL’s state. 🙁
My prayers go to you and your family.

You know, every time I turn around you demonstrate just how much of a wonderful person you truly are.

See if they have a maternity ward … You can go there, look at the kiddies and think about these people being your writing audience in a few years 🙂

I have had you and and your DiL in my thoughts a lot recently. Brit let us know at Jerry’s house that y’all were headed up there this week.

Best of luck with getting his beathing tube out and the fevers down. I think that your reading to him is a really thoughtful and compassionate thing!
