Playing hopscotch with my meds

Took an impromptu Adderall holiday yesterday. It’s not been working as well of late, and I think it might be contributing to the perpetual state of dehydrated I’ve been feeling. While I felt a wee bit more hydrated–probably aided by the arrival of both the Coca Cola fairy and the bottled water fairy–I got just shy of absolutely nothing done. I also had two (BIG) cups of coffee and two Diet Cokes, which failed to perk me up but did make me queasy.

However, I did sleep better last night than I have in a while. How irritating. My meds don’t work well enough to give me the boost I need to function like a human being, but do work well enough to throw off my sleep cycle. Lovely.

So, yah, back on the Adderall bandwagon today, although I’m shifting the time when I take it to see if that’ll help.

At least yesterday wasn’t an utter loss. fosteronfilm and I watched Love Actually last night by the fairy lights of our Christmas trees. That movie is fast becoming a favorite, new holiday tradition for us.

New Words/Editing:
– 200, at best, on “By Oak, Bramble, and Metro.”

Agh! This story just does not want to be written! I stared at it for vasty gobs of hours yesterday and could only manage a couple paragraphs. Hoping that returning to the prescription-strength uppers will get the muse hopping once more.

I’ve had quite the education in hydration over here. I get leg cramps when I’m dehydrated and Iraq sucks the water out of a person like no place I’ve ever seen. The first rule we learned was that for every 1 cup of caffeinated beverage you drink you must drink 2 cups of water to make up for it. Caffeine dehydrates you. I’ve also found that taking a couple extra potassium tablets during the day helps.

Okay, I’m off my soapbox now.

Preaching to the choir, here! Adderall is also a dehydrating diuretic, like coffee and caffeine in general, and I keep a quart-sized container of water by my desk that I refill constantly. I get toe cramps when I’m dehydrated . . . it sounds so minor, but it hurts.

I remember when I danced I used to eat bananas as a way to stave off the muscle spasms–it’s impossible to dance when pointing one’s toes is agonizing–but I’ve gotten out of the habit of loading up on potassium. Thanks for the reminder!

Here’s my Adderall hydration elixir: Emergen-C. 2 a day minimum.

Hmmm. What’s it taste like? It has the look of artificial orange-ness a la Tang . . .

      • bheansidhe says:

Weeelll… that depends on your personal preferences. The Raspberry flavor seems to be most universally accepted. I enjoy Lemon-Lime by itself, and the Tangerine too, but then I don’t mind Tang either. The “Lite with MSM” and “Joint Health” flavors are GNARSTY.

If you email your address to my lj addy, I can drop a few in the mail to you and you can try them out; I don’t mind.

Darn, I hate those stories that don’t want to be written!

I have one of those about halfway finished….for the last six months or so. (Maybe we all do)

I think we all do. I’ve got a slew of stories (and novel attempts) littering my hard drive that I started, put down, and never finished over the years. I’ve been trying not to do that anymore, but sometimes the muse just balks. This time, I really can’t let that happen since I made a commitment to an editor on this one. Although I’m wondering if I’d have better success starting over on a new story at this rate. Urg.

  4. Love Actually is one of our holiday favorites, too, can watch it over and over. Saw The Holiday on Friday night. IMHO, a must-see and there are even some writer-editor references, although not integral to the plot as in Stranger Than Fiction. If you need a lift, go see it.

Coolness. Thanks for the recommendation. has been interested in seeing The Holiday too, but I’ve been dragging my feet. Maybe this weekend we’ll make some time to bob over to the theater.
