Things that aren’t working: Hobkin’s tummy, my back, HP

Hobkin isn’t feeling well. Last night he sicked up his dinner as well as his midnight snack of (we’d hoped) tummy-settling bread and bok choy. I continue to be inordinately grateful that the little guy seems disinclined to be sick either on me, the carpet, or the furniture.

He was curled up with me on the couch, and when he realized dinner was going to make an urgent reappearance, he sprang up, scrambled off the couch, and made a mad dash into the kitchen. He didn’t quite make his area with its linoleum floor–and thereby didn’t execute another head-in-litter-box miracle–but the hard wood kitchen floor is leaps and bounds better than the living room carpet. And after his first bout, he wobbled his way into his area for his second. The poor lil guy! It always makes me feel so helpless and anxious when he’s sick. And we still have no idea what sets off these tender tummy episodes.

At least we’ve got a treatment worked out. The vet prescribes us this amazing anti-nausea stuff (which thankfully the fuzzwit loves the taste of), and Hobkin also gets mint sandwiches (bits of bread soaked in Pepto Bismol) which, in combination, fix him right up, usually within 24 hours. And as far as psychological effects go, having a queasy GI tract doesn’t seem to particularly faze him. Just a half minute after his sick-up, he was energetic and begging us for a snack to replace his lost dinner. Silly, worrisome beastie.

He crawled up to snuggle with me after all the excitement and seemed happy to bask in the extra attention as I fussed over and cuddled him.

My back continues to malfunction. I took two Tramadol yesterday, which is pretty astonishing because usually one lays me out flat. This time, one only took the edge off–didn’t even make me sleepy. Makes me wonder if it’s the pain overwhelming the med, or the Adderall keeping me awake.

According to the status info on the HP website, my laptop hasn’t shipped yet, even though the expected date was yesterday. So not a surprise. Our case manager mentioned it would take longer than their promised 3-day turnaround because they need to do fairly in-depth tests on it this time. (*snort*) I suppose we should have asked how much longer.

Writing Stuff

New Words: 500 on the Japanese Demon Hunter story, now tentatively titled: “Honor is a Game Mortals Play.” Into the climax and I’m dithering over where I want to go with it. No, scratch that. I know where I want to go with it, but I’m dithering over how to get there. Going to lasso and sit on my muse today and see if that doesn’t get her cooperative-like.

    Cool title! 🙂

Sorry Hobkin’s sick. That’s got to suck. Poor little skunk… (I’m jealous that he tries to be responsible about it. When he’s better, do you think he could come teach my cats what to do with their hairballs?)

      You like the title? Eeexcellent.

I’m jealous that he tries to be responsible about it.

It never ceases to amaze me how considerate he is about the whole business. His attempts to be sick in easy-to-clean places gives him huge brownie points, making up for the times when he’s being an amok, fuzzy brat. I still get slack-jawed when I remember the time he actually ran to his litter box and stuck his head into it to be sick. The only thing better would be for him to use the toilet and flush when he was done–which would truly qualify as a miracle, since his legs are too short to scale it.

Hey – do you think it’s obnoxious of me to be commenting on this story as you go? A few of my other authors are on LJ, and I get all excited when I see they’re working on a story for HiT. But it also occurs to me that it might be a little annoying to have the editor piping in from time to time when you’re trying to write a story… Just curious. And I won’t be offended if you tell me to go away 🙂

And obviously you just need to get a special-made toilet for the little guy. Would he be able to use one of those toddler training toilets, do you think? Though without the plumbing, that’s not much better than a litter pan.

So, do you know a good plumber? 🙂

Not at all! I quite like it. You’ve been nothing but supportive and encouraging, and what writer doesn’t yearn for their editor’s support and encouragement?

But it also occurs to me that it might be a little annoying to have the editor piping in from time to time when you’re trying to write a story…

The way I see it, if folks are posting their progress on LJ, then there’s no fathomable reason I can see that they would be annoyed when they receive feedback. If they don’t want feedback, it’s so much easier simply not to post . . .

I’m not sure. They might also be a little awkward for him to climb up to. Skunk legs, very short and stumpy. Although a flushable litter pan would amuse me to no end. I’ve heard of cats being trained to use the toilet, and that seems like such a practical behavior to teach one’s furry house companions.

Oh, poor Hobkin! And poor Eugie! It’s good to see you making progress with your story, though. Way to go!

awwwww, poor widdle skunkie! funny, my german shepherd/husky mix Miko used to LOVE bok choi. (he had weird taste in general for a dog, he also loved oranges and strawberries and diet soda!)

    • Eugie Foster says:

Bok choy is a staple in Hobkin’s diet, full of vitamins A & C and antioxidant goodness. Although he only eats the stalks; he turns his nose up at the leaves. and I usually put the leaves in a nice stir fry for us, but it does mean we humans end up eating the leftover veggie bits our skunk doesn’t want. Hee!

  4. Sorry you and Hobkin aren’t feeling well. *snugs Hobkin* Hope your back gets better soon. At least you got some words!

So now I really want a skunk. So considerate. Rat Dog just hurls on whatever surface she’s sleeping on–the couch, the Greyhound’s bed, our bed, my lap. Nasty little beastie.

I hope Hobkin’s feeling better soon. I’m paranoid, and whenever our critters get sick, I start worrying that it’s something more sinister than a tummy upset.

Oh–embarrssed squirm–hope Ms. Eugie’s back is better soon, too.

I hope the skunk gets better! Yay for hardwood floors!!!

  7. friedsf says:

    Sorry!

Sorry you and Hobkin both bobbling healthwise. What you been feeding that critter anyway to make his tummy so upset? I thought skunks were supposed to have cast iron stomachs. Can skunks have gallbaladder problems? He allergic to onions or sumptin?

And what is with your back? Back problems can be SO lousy.
As for Tramadol, that stuff just knocks me out flat, and you took two?
    Woof!

Here is to hoping both you and your shadow get to feeling better.

I hope you and Hobkin get to feeling better. My cat does the same thing when she gets sick; although, sometimes she doesn’t make it to the kitchen…

  9. I hope you and Hobkin feel better later. *hugs*

Just dropping in to say hello after reading about you on ‘s blog. It’s an enjoyable read and I’ve added you to my friends list to keep up-to-date.

    Hope Hobkin gets better soon.
