Tuesday better than Monday

Yesterday was a blah day. I accomplished nothing and felt grumpy while doing (or rather not doing) it. But fortunately I groked the error of my ways before I’d spiraled too deeply into my pit of grumpitude. The problem was, I’ve been trying to pull back on the caffeine throttle and apparently when I do that I lose any motivation to function productively.

One steaming cup of java later and I’ve:

– Assembled submission packets for and mailed off two stories into the market place.
– Cranked out 3000 words on the zero draft of the high fantasy piece I’ve been working on. It’s now at 7500 words. And draft zero is complete! Huzzah! It will need tweaking and editing, and first readering before it makes it to draft one status, but I suspect I’ll get it up to the Critters queue in a few days. I’ll probably MPC it for the week of the 21st.
– Discovered that my training class will be a 3-day rather than a 5-day class. Huzzah! Have since ragged corporate travel to change my itinerary accordingly.

Not too shabby for one little cup of coffee. And my headache’s gone too.

Hmm. Maybe a caffeine boost is what I need, too.

So far today, I’m having one of those “Every word I manage to put on the screen is like squeezing blood from a stone or like trying to pass a bowling ball” days. 🙁

    Bleah.

You know I’ve heard (and experienced, on occasion) that the writting mojo flows better in the morning. I’ve thought of maybe trying for a night job so I could get up fresh and write, then go to work. The opposite of my current pattern, where I burn myself out at my job for 8 hours and then am lucky if I can work up the motivation to even turn my computer on. (you do a regular full time job in addition to the writing, right? How do you work the schedule?)

But you know what? I can’t seem to find a coffeeshop in this town that opens before 4:00 on a weekday. WFT? (I like to take my laptop to coffeeshops to write; gets me away from destractions, makes me feel like I’ve gone out to accomplish something.)

I think it depends what sort of person you are. I’m a morning person (big time morning person) but still, I prefer not to write as soon as I wake up. Although that might have to do more with when I can write than when the best time for me is.

I’ve thought of maybe trying for a night job so I could get up fresh and write, then go to work.

I worked third shift for a year (midnight to 8) and it just about killed me. I had plenty of time to write, but usually I was so zoned I couldn’t think straight, much less crank out anything worthwhile.

Mostly I write evenings and weekends. My job lets me work a 9/80 schedule so I get three-day weekends every other week. I try to spend my whole Friday off writing. But I can also write plopped in front of the television (usually). I spent a lot of nights with my laptop on (sometimes beside me and a young skunk asleep on my lap) and tap-tap-tapping all evening.

Really? Huh. Usually I find that I can’t write in public places. I get distracted or I feel self-conscious. Although I don’t have a problem writing at Dragon*Con, but that’s a bit different.

        Ack! Morning people! Nnooooo!!!!!

Sorry. I’m just a firm believer that the only way to experience a sunrise is right before going to bed. I’m not 100% nocturnal (the screen name notwithstanding), but I’m definitely a night owl.

And I haven’t found an apreciable difference in the quality or ease of my writing based on when I do it. It really just depends on what sort of mood I’m in.

Back when I was working a “real” job in addition to my writing–before I had to quit due to my stomach condition–I was a proofreader at an ad agency. (I wasn’t a very good proofreader, but that’s a different topic.) Fortunately, my actual duties at work were such that I could always find time to get my writing done at work. One of the few perks of that job, it was…

Actually, I agree with you. My aesthetics (and my husband’s) are more evening/night oriented. I don’t actually like watching a sunrise, preferring dusk and twilight by far. And most of the stuff we enjoy doing is night stuff. But after decades of trying, I simply can’t re-train my circadian rhythms. I wake up, bright and alert, early in the morning (sometimes too early as I also suffer from early morning insomnia), and when 10pm (or before) rolls around, I turn into a pumpkin and tip over. If there’s enough happening around me (or I slam enough coffee) I can stay awake late into the wee hours, but I’m never at my best. I usually feel about 30 IQ points down. And I still wake up at an ungodly hour in the morning even if I’ve only just gone to bed two hours before. It’s very frustrating.

And what’s really sad is that Matthew and I are at such extremes. If allowed to (such as when he’s convalescing from major back surgery), he’s completely nocturnal. He doesn’t go to bed until after 5am, and then sleeps until noon!

  4. I love coffee too. Sometimes, when I don’t have it in the morning, I get a headache. I think I’m addicted to it. I guess just wanna tell you…after reading your post in smallfurries community, I read more about you on your profile. Sounds like there’s a lot of things going for you. Ya know, I almost majored psychology in college, but changed my mind and instead majored graphic designs. I’ve also learned that you’re into writing. Very fascinating. I would like to have more friends who loves to write and who loves small furries.I hope to get acquainted with you here on LJ land, and learn more about your Ferrets and Skunk. I have a Mini-Lop bunny, and a Peruvian guinea pig. I hope you don’t mind, I added you to my friends. 🙂
