Twelfth Night and writing

Went to the Shakespeare Tavern last night and saw Twelfth Night. Laughed right out loud several times. It wasn’t as good as their Merry Wives but still side-splitting goodness there. They did an interesting interpretation of it, cutting a lot of Sebastian’s part and really playing up Fabian’s. Interesting and lending to greater hilarity.

Came home afterwards feeling pretty spry still so watched Shrek on DVD. That was a terribly clever movie.

I’m now up to twelve crits on Critters and am going to stop complaining about not enough lovin. The reviews are all across the board on this one so far. Several people really liked it, a few thought it was good but needs some work, and a couple are just appalled by it. Okay, it’s bawdy. I wrote it as bawdy. But some people are having some real problems with the lascivious level. Okay, I’m the first to admit that my sensibilities about sex things are a bit further afield than the average population’s, but I didn’t think I was particularly over the top with this one. Maybe having a professional dominatrix as a supporting character was just too much? But she’s so lovable, dammit.

Oh well, I’ll wait until the end of the critique week to determine if I want to scale that portion back.

I did get a critique from one guy that really got me irritated. I’ve been with Critters for quite a few years now and in the course of that membership I think I’ve acquired a fairly thick skin with regard to critiques. But this person’s crit was full of wise-ass cracks, and he just totally missed things that no one else has. Like he thought one scene had two secondary characters in a situation where I only wrote one. First of all, where the hell did he come up with the second character? And next, he goes on to complain about being confused by the presence of two characters in that scene. Well duh, you’re obviously confused because there’s only character there. WTF?

Oh well. I’m trying to just chalk that one up to being on totally different wavelengths, as does happen upon occasion, and moving on. Moving on. La de da de da.

This sounds like some of the feedback I got on “Tryst.” For example, one person (and one only) thought that Vass was a new character introduced at the end of the story. Sigh. At least I’m not the only one with such troubles. I don’t want you to be irate, but I understand. Complain as much as you want to me — mine’s a sympathetic ear.

I love how you chose the vampire-ferret pic to go along with this post. Quite fitting!

I’ve read your story myself, BTW, and I’ll be writing up your critique today. O yes, quite bawdy, indeed. I think I scribbled the note “leaving PG-13 territory here” on one of the pages. Heh. Anyway, more soon.

(Psst — would you be willing to tell me who this pompous jackass critiquer is? I’m gonna find out eventually, and I’m dying to know if it’s the Really Big Honking Jackass I got on “Tryst.” Just e-mail me, or tell me to mind my own business. 😉 )

Heh. I did try to keep the tone light throughout so that I could intersperse a bit more risqué subject matter. Did you really think I flew out of PG-13 territory? Acht, I’ll just fidget until I get your critique.

Email winging its way to you shortly!

Well, perhaps not. I’m no MPAA expert. Do you have a target market in mind for this story yet? You know better than I how much (or how little) the dominatrix angle will limit the work’s salability (?sp).

I’m at work right now (grr), but I’ll get to that crit this afternoon. I’d much rather be working on that than this crap here!

No specifics, just the regular suspects: Realms of Fantasy, Black Gate, etc. Guess I’ll need to do some lip chewing to gamble on how much BDSM lifestyle I want to risk. Sigh.

          I’m at work right now

You’re at work on a Sunday morning? Heaps and gobs of sympathy! You poor, poor thing. Hope you can finish up whatever you need to do and get home to J ASAP. And not just because I’m eager to read your comments on my story, either!
