Weekend was hectic. Had a photo shoot on Saturday for the Dragon*Con Breast Cancer Research charity calendar (I believe the consensus is to now call the calendar “Volunteer Vixens of Dragon*Con”) at the Mindspace Tea Bar and Lounge. The venue was great. In addition to fabu tea, they also had a gorgeous Japanese garden out back with a koi pond and live bamboo wall. Looking forward to seeing how those pix turned out.
Sunday was the second Dragon*Con all-staff meeting, and we dragged Patrick along to it. fosteronfilm picked up a box of submissions for the Film Festival. Waved and chatted to several folks, and did a bit of pre-convention coordinating. Things are ramping up. And my Daily Dragon staff roster is set . . . I think.
Via the blogosphere (and especially through the efforts of frankwu), the identities of five of my Launchpad classmates has been revealed:
Samantha Henderson (samhenderson)
K. Tempest Bradford (ktempest)
Lori Ann White (shaolingrrl)
Frank Wu (frankwu)
So that’s half of us. Can’t wait to find out who the other six will be!
The postal rate change goes into effect today. Ugh. Have you signed the Stamp Out Postal Rate Hikes petition?
From the website :
Save Small and Independent Publishers
Postal regulators have accepted a proposal from media giant Time Warner that would stifle small and independent publishers in America. The plan unfairly burdens smaller publishers with higher postage rates while locking in special privileges for bigger media companies.
In establishing the U.S. postal system, the nation’s founders wanted to ensure that a diversity of viewpoints were available to “the whole mass of the people.” Time Warner’s rate increase reverses this egalitarian ideal and threatens the marketplace of ideas on which our democracy depends.
– 40-day form nope from Glimmer Train. Not a surprise.
I’m conducting an online workshop Worldbuilding for Writers: Transporting Readers Beyond the Ordinary.
Register (Deadline, May 27.)
– 450 on the Fox Princess novel.
7,551 / 40,000
Double mondo congrats on the Launchpad acceptance. That ought to be very very cool.
Thanks! I’m pretty jazzed about it.
“The postal rate change goes into effect today. Ugh. Have you signed the Stamp Out Postal Rate Hikes petition?”
Signed it, and put the word out on all my blogs, my MySpace and my new website. Did you chack out what Time Warner, Verizon, and the others have been trying to do with the Internet, too? I got the vid up on my MySpace right there on the left side in my General section, along with a link to show how to help stop it.
Did I just spell “check” as “chack”? Agh! So embarrasing!
Coolness for spreading the word! Yah, there’s much evil happening on the mega corporate front. Geez, the indies have it hard enough.
You know how those Big Biz types are: “Oh no! The People are competing against us for a tiny insignificant portion of our cashflow! Crucify them!”
I remember you. You were working in Security. I hope you and your fellow staffers have a great DragonCon. If you see a slightly short gentleman with a videocamera, ask him if he is Ron. If he is he is getting footage to send to me in Iraq because sadly I can’t be in more than one place at a time.
If I could, I would.
I think you might be thinking of someone else. I’ve never worked security; I’m the Editor/Director of the Daily Dragon/On-site Publications.
I guess its possible. I was recieving a chair massage and I thought you came in to do something at the computer in that room. Of course that doesn’t mean you were working for security, I guess that was just a poor assumption on my part. In any case, I hope the upcoming Con is a tremendous success.
That’s some fine company you’ll be keeping in WY!
And G’train? Seems I can’t catch that train either. I think I’m up to a dozen rejects from them thus far.
Yah, while the GLs say otherwise, I suspect Glimmer Train isn’t really interested in speculative genre stuff. I only try them with my more enigmatic, mainstreamy stuff, and even then, I’m guessing the speculative element likely tanks me. I usually only try them as a don’t-know-where-to-sub-this-next market or in a fit of wild and unbridled optimism. Or some combination thereof.
eugie, could you describe a little
of the online course format? it sounds
Thanks for your interest!
There will be a dedicated Yahoo Group set up for my workshop for private/restricted dissemination of course material as well as submission of “homework” exercises and workshop attendee interaction. My current plan is to have twice-weekly online conference classes for discussion and questions. For folks who can’t make one or more of these, the transcript will be posted. There will be required readings as well as assignments.
Let me know if you have further questions.
If I didn’t already say so earlier, congrats!
