Waiting: Winship Oncologist Appointment Tomorrow

My appointment with my new oncologist at the Winship Cancer Institute is tomorrow, making it exactly three weeks since the CT scan which identified the tumor in my head.

All this waiting has been maddening.

We tried to get me in last week, but no go. I do not think the folks in charge of coordinating appointment times share our sense of urgency. And I know it’s futile and pointless to think like this, but I can’t help but wonder: the tumor grew to 6cm in approximately three months. How much larger has it grown in the time I’ve been stuck in a holding pattern, waiting? *flail*

  1. I hope the appointment goes well.

  2. Wishing you the best of luck and praying for you!

  3. Good luck — this kind of thing can indeed be maddening, but fingers crossed that everything goes well tomorrow. (By the way, I’m halfway through Mortal Clay, Stone Heart — fantastic stuff…)

  4. Nancy Knight says:

Yuck. I hate waiting. I hope all goes well. I know it will. I have confidence in you and your boundless spirit. Cyber hugs.

  5. Eugie, ask the doctor the same question you pose in your post. I think it’s worth noting. It’s true that some practitioners don’t feel the same sense of urgency, but in the meanwhile, they’re putting you through hell. I’m so sorry! Sending you supportive thoughts and energy.

  6. Eugie Foster says:

Thanks, Louise. I actually *have* asked that question of all my doctors. And while they agree that time is of the essence, the people in charge of scheduling appointments…not so much.

  7. Jeri Klein says:

Here’s a little NY trick. You call 3 times a,day. Every day. Magically after about 3 days a space suddenly appears. Why? Because you annoy them so much they find a,space so you stop calling. Works, every time (prob more effective for the more aggressive person to call. Not sure if that’s you or Matthew Foster)

  8. Cassy Gordon says:

*smacks facebook* Dang thing keeps eating my attempts to post. Grr. Anyway, I know it is frustrating, believe me, patience is not one of my virtues, however, I think your math might be off a little. I think it probably took more than three months to get to 6 cm, I think that’s just when it got big enough to make you notice it. Stupid lack of internal diagnostic systems on human suits! Oh, on the up note, Blake Gordon and I are hopeful that your chemo not only destroys the evil cancer but turns your wing stubs into full fledged wings. You could be the first metahuman evah! 😀

  9. Arrgh! I would certainly bring up your sense of urgency with the oncologist tomorrow. Hopefully they can give you a sense of the ideal timeline, and how to force everyone else to stick to it.

  10. Janice Clark says:

The demons hidden in the shadows are always far worse than those revealed in the light. I’m holding good thoughts for you, that after this gut-wrenching waiting you’ll be rewarded with hopeful news.

  11. Ken Schneyer says:

It’s good that the appointment’s tomorrow. The flailing is natural; you’re doing fine.

  12. Manda Benson says:

Best of luck with your appointment, Eugie.

  13. Eugie, good luck, tomorrow.

  14. Direct the flailing at the ones who are trying to put you off. Land a good punch as often as possible.

  15. I’ll be anxious to hear how it goes. Gotta keep up the momentum, and right now you probably feel like you’re standing still. In the meantime, I hope you have what you need to stay relatively comfortable and pain-free during this agonizing wait.
