Adventures with Adderall

A couple hours after taking my normal 20Mg of Adderall yesterday, I was still feeling logy. Some back and forth waffling resulted in me popping another 10Mg capsule. An hour later, I didn’t think I’d gotten much of an effect, but then I sat down to write. Huge surge in productivity. So, yay. But less than happy about the apparent increase in tolerance. Haven’t taken any Adderall today. Debating whether I want to let my system dry out for a day or two. Have my p-doc follow-up tomorrow to touch base and discuss.

Writing Stuff

Got an email from the editor of Aberrant Dreams. They want me to do a signing in January at Oxford Comics and Games (2855 Piedmont Rd NE; Atlanta, GA 30305-2767). The tentative date is Jan. 11th (a Wednesday). Watch this space for more details as I get them.

New Words:
2300 on the funny little story idea that fosteronfilm and I came up with a week and a half ago. This tale was just tugging and tugging at me, begging to be written. It’s approximately a scene or two shy of zero draft.

Also plugged 700 or so words into “Rue and Ruin.”

With regard to the energy levels – have you tried vitamin B/C supplements? Berocca is wonderful stuff. I couldn’t function in the morning without it. And somewhere about the place I have a recipe for bladderwrack (seaweed) soup which is a wonderful tonic. It doesn’t taste the best, but it’s good stuff.

Like you, I get worried by taking too many medications. I’m glad that my particular range of medical problems are mostly controlable with diet. The gastro specialist wanted to put me on steroids a few years ago to control the Inflammatory Bowel. I decided to try the diet first. Thank any listening deities it’s working.

And good news on the signing and the stories! I’m still clearing away all the uni junk so that I can make a new start on the writing. I’m just about ready to get back into it. Yay!

I do take daily vitamin and calcium supplements, although nothing specialized beyond a multi. I do occasionally bump up my B-6 and B-12 intake, along with extra magnesium when I’m feeling overstressed or twitchy.

Oof. I’m glad you never had to go on the steroids. I was on prednisone for over a year to get my Lupus/MCTD under control. I was so glad when I could finally wean off the stuff. Uck.

      YAY!!

What’s your caffeine intake like? You know, this is really interesting, because I’ve stood firm at 7-15 mg Adderall (depending on the productivity needs of the day) but my coffee jones grew another six feet in the past 6 months. I’d be interested to hear what your doc has to say, if you care to share.

    • Eugie Foster says:

I went cold turkey off the caffeine when I started taking Adderall, with a slip or two from the wagon over Halloween. Before, I used to have a daily fix that varied from a can of diet soda to a couple pots of tea (of a green/black tea blend). Haven’t felt any caffeine withdrawal symptoms, although I would have been surprised if I had, since Adderall’s a more potent stimulant.

I’ll definitely keep posting updates on my med adventures as they arise! I’m still hoping to get a Provigil script.

  3. Exciting news about the signing and at one of my favorite places, too. I’ll try to make a day-trip to ATL and attend.

I’ve never been to Oxford Comics & Games, but the Citysearch write up makes it sound really nice. This will be my first official signing. I’ve signed at informal venues–after panels at conventions and stuff–but never at a bona fide signing event. Squee!

  4. I’ve been following your adventures with Adderall with interest. My MD had given me some samples hoping to boost my energy levels, but I hadn’t noticed much of an effect, and I would start to yawn uncontrollably at some point. However, I now realize that I wasn’t really paying close attention to timing and effects and all. Maybe I’ll give the stuff another chance and track it a little more closely this time.

There’s also a difference between the Adderall XR (extended release) capsules and the non-XR ones. Usually the XR doses you take once a day and the non-XR you take two times a day. They have different effective times and all.

Do you think my weird-but-mainstream flash piece would have a chance with Aberrant Dreams? It’s not very plotty, so it might not be a good fit just for that reason, but the content guidelines are vague.

If you ever do a signing in Phoenix, do let me know. I’ll be first in line yes I will (er, I promise I’m not a stalker).
