Batman Begins & Wild, Wild Planet

Comcast keeps dropping our Internet connection in and out. It’s very aggravating.

Watched Batman Begins, courtesy Netflix, last night. I liked it, but not to the gushing point. I found the amount of soap boxing and moralizing–“it’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you” blah blah blah–tiresome pretty quickly. If Hollywood must lecture, I wish they’d do it while something is blowing up in the background. However, they did make great strides into making up for the slow bits with lots of blowing up at other times, and while not up to Joss Whedon’s writing, the banter was pretty good. I was especially fond of “Well, you know how it is, Mr Fox. You’re out at night, looking for kicks and someone’s passing around the weaponised Hallucinogens.” And of course, there were all the shiny gadgets, stunts, and fight scenes, standard Hollywood eye candy.

fosteronfilm also subjected me to Wild, Wild Planet so he could review it. It’s a ’60s Italian space adventure, and it’s bad. Really really bad. It was on the scale of badness that defies bad and by the sheer caliber of its awfulness becomes good. We chortled our way through it in classic MST3K fashion, pointing at the cheesy special effects, goggling at the unfathomable storyline, and snickering at the outrageous dialogue.

Writing Stuff

Got an invitation to submit to an invite-only anthology. Makes me feel all elite and exclusive. Well, it makes me feel like I’ve got a 50/50 chance of getting into the anthology, is what it does. Now I just have to come up with a story. It needs to be heroic fantasy and I don’t write a huge amount of that, but I’m certain I can rise to the challenge. After I finish the current WIP. Hey, I just realized I’ll be working on two invite-only projects in a row. I’m a grown-up writer! Mmm, no, on second thought, I don’t think I qualify until I start making a helluva lot more money from this. Shoot.

New words: after the splut of productivity yesterday, I could only bring myself to do a couple editing passes. I very much hope that my muse is not so much of a masochistic that I need to bruise or bump something in order to get her to perform. I mean writing can be painful, but c’mon!

  1. Congrats on the invite-only anthologies! I am beating down the green-eyed monster with a tree trunk. You may borrow my implements of torture to control your misbehaving muse. And about the money? I have no doubt that it will soon be flowing your way in ever widening streams. Have you ever tried to write Mock Heroic epic (fantasy or otherwise)? I think you would have a ball with it if the epic fantasy would allow it.

Since right now the dribbles coming in aren’t even enough to starve on, I’m going to have to hope for a flash flood if I’m going to have any hope of making enough to scrape by on.

Actually, yes. “Mistress Fortune Favors the Unlucky” is a very tongue-in-cheek fantasy story, and it was an utter blast to write. I subsequently sold it to the Bash Down the Door and Slice Open the Badguy anthology. But I’m pretty sure these anthology folks aren’t really in the market for humor.

Time to flog the muse for inspiration . . .

  2. I plan on Watching Batman Begins tonight. From the previews, it looked similar to the first one, which was fantastic.

  3. Congrats on the invitation! How exciting! 🙂

Hi! You don’t know me. I guess I don’t really know you. I don’t even know how I ended up here (yea, I do. I’m at work, I’m bored straight, I’m snooping around my friends’ friends page and, alas, here I am).

Anyway, you sound brilliant and funny. Unless you object, I’m going to “friend” you!

I think I’ve said it before, but it’s been a while. It’s so gratifying watching your writing career progress.

congrats, I *LOVE* heroic fantasy, adn fantasy in general. As for comcast, I’ve been having those problems with them for months. I call at least 3 to 4 times a week and they send people out. I have them all very unhappy, and they have yet to locate the cause of the problem. My modem works, my signal levels are fine, we just go down everyday, and always at a very inconveniant time (of course)

Comcast is notoriously unstable in our area, but for a while it was getting better. I had hopes that they’d actually fixed whatever it was that kept taking down service, but now this. Feh!
