Skunk go poof

Hobkin’s blowing his coat. I’d forgotten what a shedding skunk was like. I pet him and there’s a cloud of fuzz in the air. After a nap, there’s long, white strands of tail on the couch and blanket. Skunk fur. Everywhere I look there’s skunk fur!

I see that LiveJournal is having a 24-hour permanent account sale. Ooo! But I really can’t rationalize spending $150 on my blog. Damn.

Writing Stuff

I found out that “Running on Two Legs,” which appeared in #40 of The Third Alternative, was nominated for the 2005 British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story! It’s terribly unlikely it’ll win, or hell, even make the short list, considering the competition (I’m up against Neil Gaiman for starters), but I’m tickled neon fuchsia to be nominated. Squee!

Any BFS members who haven’t read “Running on Two Legs” are welcome to drop me an email. I’ll forward on a .PDF for your reading pleasure.

Also received the contracts from Cricket for “Li T’ien and the Demon Nian” and “Cuhiya’s Husband.” Signed and mailed them back. “Li T’ien” is slated for the Jan. 2006 issue. Yay! Eagerly looking forward to seeing it, as well as getting word of when the others stories Cricket‘s bought will be scheduled for publication.

And got a 242-day reject from the Damned Nation anthology. A near miss: “We are especially sorry to have to send this after sitting on [your story] for so long, but we had a number of excellent stories we remained undecided about until the last minute, and yours was one of them . . . Please know that this was a very close call.”

Fooie. I would like a sale now.

Congratulations on the nomination! Way cool!

Congratulations on the nomination, Eugie! That’s super! I’m sorry to have to admit that I’ve never heard of Neil Gamain. I take it he’s famous, though, from the way you say his name…I think you should win, anyway. :huggles: But it’s awesome that you got nominated!

Hobkin sounds like my Ladybug when she’s shedding, except that Ladybug is just black. You could vacuum twice a day, and there would still be piles of dog hair under everything, in every corner.

      Thanks, Keesa!

Goodness! You’ve never heard of Neil Gaiman? He’s fabulous, most famous for his Sandman series of graphic novels/comics–he’s also done movies and short stories and novels. I’m a huge fan of his. If you should happen across his work, I highly recommend starting with his Sandman books.

      • keesa_renee says:

N-e-v-e-r. Then again, I’m not really surprised. There are a lot of famous people I’ve never heard of. 😀

And thanks for the recommendations; I’ll keep that in mind next time I’m at Books-A-Million with one of those delightful (but pesky) gift cards, and don’t know what to get.

    Conga rats on the nomination!

And… I wish the ferrets would blow *their* coats! They’ve got to be hot in all that fur (and ferretchub).

    • Eugie Foster says:

      Thank you!

Your woozles don’t shed? Huh. I wonder if it’s due to a difference in locations. Ours used to. Not nearly as much as Hobkin, but there was a definite difference between their winter and summer coats. But come to think of it, they didn’t so much “blow” their coats as sort of gradually floof them over anything with a contrasting color.

      • jmeadows says:

The monsters are supposed to blow their coats (like Hobkin does) twice a year. Mine are being lazy bums so far and I bet they’re hot.

And I think Leanne may be backwards. All winter she had short hair and she was thin thin (but healthy, according to the vet). Now she’s starting to chub out and her hair is getting thicker. *sigh* But the boys– The BOYS need to shed, and they have plenty to do so with. 😀

        • Eugie Foster says:

Silly, silly woozles! And poor Leanne! That’s too funny (and too cute). “What d’you mean it’s not winter, Mom?”

          • jmeadows says:

Heh, yeah. Poor thing is gonna be hoooot this summer. But I have bottles of ice in the freezer now, waiting for a hot day so she can curl up against it. Alas, our house is poorly air conditioned. At least we don’t live in Atlanta! 😉

  4. aimeempayne says:

Yeah, the dogs are blowing their coats, too. If anyone ever tries to tell you greyhounds don’t shed, you have my permission to laugh in their face.

Congrats on the nomination! I loved “Running On Two Legs.” Good luck.

  5. I can’t rationalize it either. But I’ve got a few more days to come up with a good justification!

  6. sonnydenbow says:

    Congratulations on the nomination!

  7. puskunk says:

    Against Neil Gaiman. Wow.

  8. dys7topia says:

Eugie: I got the ‘nomination’ notification too this morning, but I’m not sure it’s correct. Much like the other genre awards, I think we’ve merely made the recommendations list — the preliminary ballot — and not the actual nominations. I’ve written for clarification, but from what I’ve seen on the BFS website, it looks like I’m correct.

    Kealan

    • Eugie Foster says:

Hell, Kealan, I’m ready to go dancing in the streets for making the preliminary ballot! Even if I don’t make the short list, I’m thrilled to even be on the recommendations or preliminary nominations or whatever-it’s-officially-called list! Someone actually liked one of my stories enough to suggest it might be worthy of a BFA. Wheee!

  9. Hallo!
Um. I noticed that you’d friended and unfriended me. Just wondering who you were, how you found me, and when I can pet your skunk. 😀

    • Eugie Foster says:

Um. I noticed that you’d friended and unfriended me. Just wondering who you were

Sorry about the schizophrenic friending/unfriending. In a fit of blog reading, I added a bunch of people who looked interesting over the weekend, and then when the caffeine wore off, I re-thought my impulsive behavior. I still think you seem pretty cool and interesting, so I’ve added you again, now that I know you don’t mind.

      how you found me

I believe I stumbled across you via Cherie ().

and when I can pet your skunk

Whenever you’re in the Atlanta area!

      • so I’ve added you again
        bwaha
        bwahahaha
        bwahahahahahaahahahahahaaaahahahaaaaa
Oh, you silly silly person. 😀 Come for the madness, stay for the 2509 billion posts I make a day.

I believe I stumbled across you via Cherie (wicked_wish).
She’s quite the gal, ain’t she? I can’t wait until I can get the rerelease of her book.

Whenever you’re in the Atlanta area!
Y’know, I’ve got a whole horde of people to meet down there, should I ever go. I’ll put you and Lil Skunkie on the list.

  10. cussedness says:

    Congrats on the nom, Eugie.

  11. writer_space says:

Oooh! Congrats on the nomination for the BFA! 😀

  12. Congrats on the nomination! That’s awesome. I loved Gaiman’s American Gods, though I must admit I’m not much of a graphic novel reader. Is the Sandman stuff worth reading, or is it just oooh, pretty pictures, oh, and a few words?

    • Eugie Foster says:

It’s excellent. Actually, I tend to think the artwork isn’t all that great. It’s Gaiman’s writing and characters that really carry the Sandman series.

  13. alijt says:

Yeah, you are not kiddding. 2 of my stinks are in full blowing coat stage and it sucks on the black clothing. We find little skunkie tail feathers everywhere!!! 😉

    • Eugie Foster says:

With all the fur flying in our house right now, I can’t imagine what it would be like having multiples of the little fuzzwit’s blowing their coats at the same time. You must be nearly wading in skunk fur!
