Brief update: still sick, Hobkin, writing stats

Haven’t been LJing much. The cold I thought I was almost over seems to have decided to migrate to my chest and camp out there indefinitely in the form of a really annoying cough. Blah. Lung bits anyone?

In Hobkin news:
The other day I was making a pie, one of those no-bake, pie-in-a-box dealies. One of the instructions was to beat the filler on high with an electric mixer for three minutes.

Hobkin completely freaked out when I turned on the mixer. For something like half an hour after I finished using the mixer he tore around the house at full speed, knocking into things when he couldn’t corner fast enough, terrified out of his little fuzzy mind. I tried to pick him up to calm him down and had to trap him in the bathroom in order to catch him. And then he nearly jumped out of my arms so that he could go tearing around some more. We offered him a little bit of food and he was so scared he wouldn’t take it from us.

Eventually, he calmed down and then it was business as usual as he came up for snuggles, but it was really weird. I’ve used the mixer before around him and while he doesn’t like it, he hasn’t had this sort of response. He doesn’t respond as wildly to the vacuum cleaner either.

Poor lil guy. I guess that means no more pie-in-a-boxes for us.

Writing stats:
– 8000 words into the novel. Still going strong.
– Re-write of S&S piece has commenced. Still surprised at how positive the feedback has been on this one.

I just got the funniest picture in my mind of a skunk tearing through the house like my cat does. Btw, I saw a skunk on TV tonight, they have HUGE teeth!

Yep. He was even running in circles. Well, it’s pretty easy to run in circles in our house. Our great room is just one big loop from the kitchen to the living room to the dining room. I think he was just in panic mood and needed to run, even though he wasn’t going anywhere.

And yes, he’s got some impressive chompers on him. Fortunately, he seems to have a working understanding of “No bite!”

Hahahaha! Can skunks run very fast?? That had to have been SOOO cute to see him sprinting like that.

        • Eugie Foster says:

Normally, I’d say that skunks are not all that fast on their feet. Obviously, in the wild they don’t need to be. But Hobkin got some good speed going with his little legs. I couldn’t catch him until I’d cornered him. So he’s not greyhound fast, but he can get pretty speedy. It’s very cute.

I know!!! The more I read about him, the more I just go “Awww! I want one!!” Do you know of anyone who sells tame skunks in Florida?

          • Eugie Foster says:

I don’t know of anyone who breeds skunks in Florida, although it is a legal state and I know a lot of skunk owners there. Consider hooking up with the Yahoo Group “skunkchat”. You might be able to see about adopting a rescue. Although if you do so, I would recommend opening a new email account for them. It’s a very prolific and active group. There have been days when we’ve gotten hundreds of skunkchat emails. We’ve got a dedicated email account for it. Also, a lot of the skunk shows are held in Florida. I’d recommend trying to attend one of those before getting a skunk. It’s a good way of getting to know what skunks are like and networking with the community. It’s what we did before getting Hobkin.

Otherwise, the only breeders I know of are in Iowa. We got Hobkin from a really reputable one there. It was worth the extensive road trip.

Thanks! Not that my dad wouldn’t have a cow about that, either, but once I move out (if I ever can, due to my health) I want one! I could still go to the shows, though. I’m going to do a search online and see if there are any skunk breeders or shows near me =0)
